Looking for Adventure? Kentucky’s Red River Gorge is Awesome

Did you know there is a canyon system in Kentucky? Red River Gorge is a canyon system located about an hour east of Lexington and offers adventure for everyone. Designated a National Natural Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s an area of incredible beauty that makes a perfect weekend getaway.

Popular with rock climbers, hikers, and campers, the Red River Gorge (or RRG as it’s known) is a paradise for any outdoor enthusiast. For those of you that are less active, you can still enjoy the gorgeous scenery.

Where to Stay in RRG/Natural Bridge

Lodging options in Red River Gorge range from lodges, cabins, RV parks as well as more adventurous options.

Hemlock Lodge at Natural Bridge

Part of the Kentucky State Parks system, Hemlock Lodge offers the closest accommodations you can find near Natural Bridge. Rooms and cabins are available and the resort has a pool and restaurant making it a great option for families or visitors wanting some of the luxuries of home.

Cliffview Resort

Cliffview Resort has a lodge with sixteen rooms and they rent two luxury cabins with 11-12 bedrooms! Coming with a large group? This would be an amazing place to stay.

Bedrock at the Red

Hoping to make some new friends while hiking in the Gorge? A stay at Bedrock at the Red may be just what you’re looking for. Their property includes a community space for guests. You can choose a private room or a shared bunk.

4 Guys RV Park

With 45 RV sites and primitive sites, 4 Guys RV Park is a great option for those traveling in an RV to RRG. The park includes a swimming pool and other amenities.

Red River Gorge Cabins

Cabins in the Natural Bridge and Gorge are everywhere. Everything from cozy cabins for a romantic getaway to larger cabins that will accommodate the whole family. Red River Gorge Tourism has a list of some of the most popular rentals.

Natural Bridge State Park

The Natural Bridge State Resort Park is surrounded by the stunning Daniel Boone National Forest. Natural Bridge, a sandstone arch reaching 65 feet high, is the main attraction here. You’ll find multiple paths leading to the arch as well as a skylift for those unable or not interested in hiking. Views from the top of the bridge will knock your socks off!

Zipline

Soar the gorge at Red River Gorge Ziplines, The course has 2 side-by-side racing lines and covers five lines. You won’t find a better view of the mountains!

Hike in Red River Gorge

Hiking is one of the primary activities in RRG. Whether you are a novice hiker or have lots of miles on the trail, you’ll find plenty of hiking in the Red River Gorge Area. This list of the top ten hikes in the Gorge has everything from marked to unmarked trails, easy to moderate.

Bird Watching

Red River Gorge is considered on the birding hotspots in Kentucky. Pull out your binoculars and enjoy the joy of spotting woodpeckers, warblers, and hawks!

Red River Gorge Fishing

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife encourages fishermen to fish along the middle section of the Red River where you’ll see a variety of bass, jumpy, and trout. You can fish from a canoe or enjoy fly fishing.

Canoeing/Kayaking

A portion of the Red River is designated a Kentucky Wild River which means canoeing enthusiasts will find some of the best canoeing water in the eastern United States. You can find tours and rentals here!

Red River Gorge Rock Climbing

Red River Gorge is one of the best places for rock climbing in the world! Climbers come from all over the world to scale the many climbing areas located in RRG. The Red River Gorge Climbers’ Coalition is a wealth of information about rock climbing in Red River Gorge.

Go for a Drive

All of the roads in this area offer beautiful views of the scenery. You’ll ooh and aah, especially in the fall, as you wind through the curving mountain roads. This area is one of the 25 best places to see fall color in Kentucky.

Go Horseback Riding

You’re just an hour down the road from Lexington (ADD LINK), the Horse Capital of the World so why not hop on a horse while in the mountains? Cable’s Riding Stables and Whisper Valley Trails both offer horseback trails to see the beauty of the area from a different perspective.

The Gorge Underground

The Gorge Underground says it’s the coolest place in the gorge. Take a boat, kayak, or standup paddle board tour all in the comfort of the fifty-five degrees temps in this flooded mine.

Restaurants near Natural Bridge

Many of these restaurants have seasonal hours. Be sure to check open days and times before going.

Miguel’s Pizza

Miguel’s Pizza in Red River Gorge is a must-visit when in the area. Visitors order pizzas by the boxful and enjoy their slices in the incredibly beautiful setting. I was impressed by the many interesting pizza toppings available including mango salsa, tofu, and beans. Their menu also includes salads, sandwiches, and bowls and includes gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. Miguel’s also serves a full breakfast menu giving you the option to fuel up before hitting the trails.

La Cabana Mexican Restaurant

I didn’t get a chance to eat at La Cabana on a recent trip, but it was always busy when we drove by. My brother-in-law lives just down the street and said it’s one of his favorite places to eat in Red River Gorge. They have a full menu of Mexican favorites and a full bar. Perfect for a bite after a day of fresh air.

Red River Smokehouse

Red River Smokehouse is the place to find Texas BBQ in the middle of Kentucky. We had some seriously delicious food when here when we visited! How can you argue with a massive baked potato stuffed with smoked BBQ and topped with cheese? Be aware, they often sell out and will close when they do.

Red River Rockhouse

Red River Rockhouse serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and features ingredients from local farms. Locals rave about the burgers! Another restaurant with a variety of vegetarian and vegan options, including a veggie burger.
