In this uncertain, unfamiliar times we all need a little escape. And current restrictions have made a physical escape pretty much impossible. But I’ve got some good news! Netflix offers a bunch of shows that will help you travel from home.

Cooking and traveling are two of my favorite things so there are a lot of shows here that combine the two. I’m also a big fan of silly comedy and there’s some of that here as well. But all of these Netflix travel shows will give you a chance to unwind and dream about your next trip.

1) Somebody Feed Phil

Somebody Feed Phil follows Phil Rosenthal as he explores a city through its food. Phil is the creator of “Everybody Loves Raymond” and his humor is one of the many things I love about this show. The show will make you hungry, laugh, and inspire you to travel. His Lisbon episode is one of my favorites and was one of the reasons I booked a trip there.

2) Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father

On Travels With My Father, comedian Jack Whitehall and his father Michael travel through Southeast Asia, Los Angeles, and Europe. It’s incredibly silly which makes it the perfect binge right now. I laughed until I cried at one scene in the first episode! You’ll find yourself laughing at the generational differences in traveling and may even be touched at their father-son dynamic. And I just found out that there is going to be a fourth season, this time in Australia.

3) Ugly Delicious

I recently discovered chef David Chang’s Netflix series, Ugly Delicious. Each episode features a specific dish or type of cooking such as pizza, fried chicken, steak, etc. and explores how different cultures and countries prepare a dish. Follow David and his celebrity and chef pals as they travel the world finding food that may not be pretty but sure is delicious.

4) Salt Fat Acid Heat

Chef Samin Nosrat travels the world teaching us about the four keys of great cooking, salt, fat, acid, and heat. Salt Fat Acid Heat is a four-part series that will take you to Italy, Japan, Mexico, and California. Each episode features visits to food producers and is part travelogue, part cooking show. Her book by the same name is wonderful as well and should be part of any cook’s library.

5) The Kindness Diaries

Leo Logothetis travels the world relying only on the kindness of strangers. He can’t accept any money and in exchange for the food, lodging, and gas he receives from strangers, Logothetis uses his own money to fund various projects from doing construction work at a school to feeding orphans. The Kindness Diaries is at its core a social experiment showing that there is more good than bad in the world. It will not only transport you to faraway places but will also renew your faith in humanity.

6) Dark Tourist

Like weird, odd, and creepy places? Then Dark Tourist is the perfect binge for you. David Farrier visits unusual tourist attractions around the world and chronicles his experiences in each episode. Episodes include visits to a haunted forest, JFK assassination tours, and a swim in a lake formed by a nuclear blast.

7) Street Food

I love trying local foods when traveling, but am not always brave enough to try street food. This series explores the best street food cities such as Osaka, Bangkok, Seoul, and Singapore have to offer. This documentary takes you into the lives of the food vendors and will leave you wanting to go to Bangkok just to eat a crab omelet.

8) The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes

Part House Hunters International, part design, and part travel show, The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes travels the world looking for incredible homes. Sit back and fall under the spell of the beautiful scenery and homes.

9) Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip

If you’re a fan of the Great British Bake Off, expect to see Paul Hollywood in a different light. Paul Hollywood’s Big Continental Road Trip follows Hollywood through his European road trip as he learns about the cars of each country. I didn’t expect to like this concept as much as I did. Even if you are not a car aficionado you’ll feel like your racing through the streets of Italy, France, and Germany.

10) Instant Hotel

Itching to visit Australia? Instant Hotel gives you a glimpse of gorgeous Australia as contestants stay at and rate each other’s vacation rentals. The show reminds me a bit of one of my all-time favorite reality travel shows, The Amazing Race. Entertaining and easy to watch, Instant Hotel is just what is needed when you need a reprieve from the relentless news cycle.

    1. I was addicted to Instant Hotel when I returned from my trip to Australia, I only wish they would make a 3rd series. I also love the Kindness Diaries. A nice selection of programmes here.

      1. Thank you! Oddly, I haven’t been watching too many travel shows during quarantine. I think it makes me miss travel even more!
