Nonesuch, Kentucky

Nonesuch, Kentucky is a teeny community located in Woodford County. The 30-minute drive from Lexington is a delight as you drive through lush farmland and spot Kentucky’s famous thoroughbred horses dotting the landscape. Nonesuch is a great day trip from either of Kentucky’s largest cities, Louisville or Lexington. Drive time from Louisville is about an hour and only thirty minutes from Lexington. Doing the Kentucky Bourbon Trail? A visit to Irish Acres and The Glitz Restaurant in Nonesuch is a great detour.

The Glitz Restaurant

Descend the stairs into The Glitz and you’re met with hundreds of lights hanging from the low ceilings. The ambiance is magical! The decor here is best described as girlie, which makes it the perfect place for bridal showers, birthday parties, and any other event that begs you to don your prettiest dress. You and your friends will ooh and aah at the over-the-top decor. Truly a unique experience in the middle of horse country!

The Glitz Menu

The Glitz menu features a set menu with a choice of appetizer, entree, and dessert for $29.95 (July 2021). The restaurant features fresh ingredients, including those from nearby farms, as often as possible. The approach is to build a menu around seasonality in order to take advantage of the superior agricultural products we have available in Kentucky.

Our options included a corn bisque, salad, and a zucchini ravioli for starters. I chose the ravioli, paper-thin strips of zucchini wrapped around a ricotta filling and served with a pesto sauce. It was sublime and the perfect dish on a hot July afternoon. A chicken cordon bleu served over lettuce and topped with fresh fruit and glazed pecans and flank steak options available on the menu during our visit. We ate one of each at our table and thoroughly enjoyed both.

The Glitz is famous for its Nonesuch Kiss dessert. A generous scoop of jamocha ice cream fills a crown of meringue and is finished with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, and slivered almonds. In addition to this always available option was a pavlova (a personal favorite), the meringue cradled a rich, yet light sauce and was sprinkled with berries.

Lunch includes a spiced apple-cranberry juice cocktail (alcohol-free) that tasted like fall in a champagne flute. It’s so popular that they sell it by the bottle. Buy a bottle and bring home a little bit of The Glitz. Minature bran muffins, served alongside honey butter tempt between courses. You can also buy a The Glitz cookbook featuring their seasonal menus and many of their most popular recipes.

Antique Stores in Kentucky – Irish Acres Antiques

Irish Acres Gallery of Antiques is one of the more unique antique stores in Kentucky! Picture room after room of European and American antiques. Themed rooms invite you to move slowly through the three floors. I loved the glamour of the nursery and the bright colors and nostalgia of the kitchen. But I resisted purchasing several whimsical pieces. Antique lovers will love the selection here and non-antique lovers will appreciate the novelty and whimsy.
